A Snippet:

The Internet is having a direct, highly beneficial impact on the environment. It is, in turn having an impact on the resource driven economy of British Columbia.

Default Effect of computers on environment

As I sit here at home typing this up I wonder about my effect on the world as my computer sucks up elecrtricity, global temperatures and sea levels rise and the Vancouver Island rainforest around me is threatened by longer dryer summers. Drought may kill off moisture loving trees like cedar and fires will become more frequent. Fortunately most of our electricity is hydro power, but demand is outstripping supply even here and elsewhere electricity is contributing even more to global warming.

How much has the rise of the internet contribute to global warming? Hopefully as LCD screens and more effecient computers come along their contribution will lesson. Hopefully proper electronics recycling will become the norm. Hopefully more people will telecommute and reduce greenhouse gases from vehicle emissions. Hopefully we are not trading short term forest destruction for long term global disaster. Hopefully more alternative power will come on line. Hopefully the internet will help people become aware of these issues and empower them to take actions.

Then I can continue to take people on tours of this wonderful rainforest and the salmon rivers fed by snow melt.
